Women's sober living near West Covina

West Covina is the largest city in the San Gabriel Valley without a certified recovery residence in it. Two hospitals discharge here, the courthouse on Covina Parkway sends women to treatment as a condition of probation, and when either one needs a sober bed for a woman, there is nothing in the city to refer her to.

Treatment and hospitals

Two hospitals, two different discharge problems. Emanate Health Queen of the Valley Hospital, 1115 S Sunset Avenue, (626) 962-4011, carries 325 licensed beds and is the acute-care anchor for this part of the valley (CHHS facility data). Kindred Hospital San Gabriel Valley, 845 N Lark Ellen Avenue, (626) 339-5451, is a 76-bed long-term acute hospital (CHHS facility data) — its patients leave after weeks, not days, and frequently leave to nowhere.

A woman leaving either one with a substance use history and no stable address is the exact placement this house exists for. We are not a treatment program and provide no clinical care; her prescriber and clinic stay hers.

Women's meetings

The meeting listed inside West Covina is STAG 12&12 Study, Thursdays 8:30 p.m., 520 S Lark Ellen Avenue — a men's meeting (AA meeting listings). For women, the nearest is one city over: Women's “As Bill Sees It”, Mondays 6:30 p.m., S.G.V. Alano Club, 510 S 2nd Avenue, Covina (AA meeting listings).

Some of the women we house are leaving an abusive home rather than a treatment bed, and for them the housing question is the whole question — the practical alternative to a bed is often returning to the person she left.

We do not publish the address of the house. It is given only to accepted residents and to the agencies that refer them. To be clear about what this is: Her Aria is not a licensed domestic violence shelter, and we do not provide protective services, security services, legal advocacy, restraining order help or safety planning. Those stay with a woman's own advocate, attorney and law enforcement agency.

What West Covina doesn't have

Nothing. The certified directories list zero recovery residences in West Covina — none with CCAPP (CCAPP directory), none with the Sober Living Network (Sober Living Network). Three operator websites rank for the city name without having a house in it.

So a discharge planner at Queen of the Valley looking for a women's sober bed in her own city has none. We are 17 minutes east: women only, gated, MAT welcome, no deposit. Refer a client.

Getting here from West Covina

Foothill Transit runs the Covina corridor east toward the house, and Metrolink's San Bernardino Line connects the valley end to end (Foothill Transit). A woman without a car can get to work and to meetings from here, which is the test that matters — residents keep their own jobs, appointments and prescribers.
