Work and training
Finding work from Her Aria
Built for a woman starting over with a thin work history, maybe a record, and no car. Everything below is a starting point — an address, a phone number, a cost, or a link to somebody else's application page.
If you only have one week
A practical order of operations
None of this is a guarantee of a job, an income, or a legal result. It is the sequence that wastes the least time and money.
Apply for benefits first
CalWORKs, CalFresh and Medi-Cal, on BenefitsCal or in person. CalWORKs enrollment is the gate that unlocks Stage 1 childcare, the Chaffey CalWORKs program and work study, and EBT is what unlocks the Metrolink discount. Where to apply
Get your RAP sheet
$25, fee waiver may be available. You need to know exactly what an employer will see — and whether a conviction was already dismissed automatically. Then call the public defender's Post-Conviction Unit on (909) 387-7050.
Walk into the AJCC
9650 9th Street, Suite A, Rancho Cucamonga, before 3:30 pm. Free resource room, job leads, and a career advisor who can talk to an employer about On-the-Job Training reimbursement.
Apply to five employers in one sitting
Use the official links in section 2, plus Honest Jobs. No resume is needed for Amazon hourly roles. Then enroll at Chaffey for the Promise Grant and ask about CNA.
1. Start here
Free, open to everyone, no income test and no enrollment fee. If you only do one thing this week, walk into the West Valley job center.
West Valley America's Job Center of California
9650 9th Street, Suite A, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730
(909) 941-6500 · Monday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm.
Walk in and use the resource room free: computers, phones, typing tests, job leads and staff who help. Career advisors work on your resume, practise interviews with you, and help pay for training. Arrive before 3:30 pm if you want to enroll the same day.
Ask about On-the-Job Training. An employer can be reimbursed up to 50% of your wage while you learn the job — the most useful thing you can name to a manager who is nervous about a thin work history.

Honest Jobs — fair-chance job board

It shows how compatible each job is with your specific convictions, and how many people with felony convictions each company has employed. Free to join, free to search, free to apply.
It also lets you search your ZIP code for free and low-cost help with food, housing, transportation, legal problems and healthcare. Everything is online, so you can join and apply from the free computers at the job center.
Starting Over, Inc. — Path 2 SEED

This is a curated directory, not a job feed
We do not post live openings, we do not collect applications, and we do not place anyone in a job. Every card below is an employer or program that hires or enrolls continuously, linking to its own official application page. A hand-checked list of doors that stay open lasts far longer than a feed of postings that expire.
Openings, wages and hours change constantly and differ from one store or warehouse to the next. Search ZIP code 91763 on each employer's own site, and call before you travel anywhere.
2. Employers hiring continuously
Each card links to that company's own application page. Hiring happens store by store and warehouse by warehouse, so search ZIP 91763 on each site to see what is open near you, and expect wages and hours to be told to you at the store rather than posted online.
Amazon
Hourly warehouse work with no resume and no interview. The online application takes about 20 minutes and you choose your preferred shift inside it.
Roles include fulfillment centre, sortation centre, delivery station, distribution centre, grocery warehouse, Amazon Air and XL warehouse (items over 50 pounds). After you apply: a tax credit questionnaire and Form I-9, then an unpaid in-person pre-hire appointment — bring proper I-9 identification — then an offer subject to a background check and drug test. Amazon puts up to $110 toward safety shoes.
Search 91763 on Amazon's own hiring site to see which warehouses are open near you, and turn on job alerts so you hear when a new one opens.
Check the bus before you accept a shift. Inland Empire warehouses sit in industrial areas, and shifts often start or end when buses are not running (Omnitrans Route 61 runs roughly 4:04 am–11:30 pm; Route 66 roughly 4:21 am–11:00 pm).

Montclair Place stores
A whole mall of retail employers in your own city. Walk the mall, ask at each store who does the hiring, then apply on that brand's own site. Line 480 and Line 492 both stop at Montclair Place and both end at Montclair Transit Center.
Ontario Mills stores
The other big cluster of retail jobs within reach. Each brand hires separately, so walk it store by store and apply on each brand's own site. Omnitrans Route 81 runs to Ontario Mills Mall.
One legal fact that covers every employer above: all of them have five or more employees, so the California Fair Chance Act applies to them, and none of them may lawfully ask about conviction history on the application or before a conditional offer. See section 6.
3. Staffing agencies
Temp and temp-to-hire warehouse work, usually the fastest route from application to a first paycheque. Free to job seekers. Temporary employment agencies and labour contractors are expressly covered by the Fair Chance Act, so a screening question belongs after a conditional offer, not on the application.

Select Staffing — Ontario branch
402 S Milliken, Suite E-1, Ontario, CA 91761 (branch no. 80048)
(909) 930-0557 · general questions 1-844-864-0634. Call to check today's hours before you go.
Warehouse and quality-control jobs, posted branch by branch. Recent postings: Quality Control Associate, 2nd shift, $19.00/hour, temp-to-hire, Monday–Friday 10:00 am–6:30 pm with overtime possible; Experienced Warehouse Picker, $17.50–$18.50/hour. Expect a pre-employment screening, some data entry and computer work, lifting up to 40 lbs, and overtime or six-day weeks. Apply online, then call the branch.
PeopleReady — the "Ontario" listing is not in Ontario
The branch listed as "Ontario, CA" gives a Riverside address — 11801 Pierce St., Suite 200, Office 238, Riverside 92505 — and a national phone line, 877.651.7778, with no hours shown.
Do not travel there expecting an Ontario office. Call 877.651.7778 first and ask exactly where to report, on what day, and at what time. That one call can save you a long bus trip for nothing.
Other agencies — verify before you go
Randstad and other agencies advertise Ontario-area offices. Before you spend bus fare on any staffing office, call and confirm three things: the street address, a working phone number, and today's hours.
4. Getting there without a car
Montclair Transit Center is the reason a car-free job search works from here: it is the eastern terminus for three Foothill Transit lines and the connection point to Omnitrans. It is also where the honest limits of warehouse work show up.
The four routes that matter
Route 66 — Fontana / Foothill Blvd / Montclair. Weekdays every 20 minutes, Sundays every 30, spans running roughly 4:21 am to 11:00 pm. The most useful route for Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana employers and the Chaffey Rancho area.
Route 61 — Fontana and Pomona via Ontario, including Ontario airport and the whole Holt Blvd corridor. Weekdays every 15 minutes, weekends every 30, spans roughly 4:04 am to 11:30 pm. This is the route to the benefits offices and the county clinic on Holt.
Route 81 — Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga via Ontario Mills Mall. Route 83 — Upland and Chino via Euclid. For any other route number, check the agency's route list before you plan a trip around it.
What a day of job hunting costs
Single ride $2.00. One-day pass $6.00. Reduced fare for veterans, seniors and people with disabilities: single ride $0.90, one-day pass $2.75. Children 46 inches and under ride free, and K–12 students ride free with a valid student ID on local bus, Freeway Express and sbX.
Ask a driver about 7-day and 31-day passes. Passes must be signed, and drivers may ask for proof of eligibility for a discounted pass. Goodwill's employment centres list bus passes among the work tools they provide — ask.
Three lines, all ending in Montclair
Line 480 — West Covina to Pomona to Montclair Transit Center. Stops include Pomona Adult and Career Education, Western University of Health Sciences, Civic Center Plaza, Mt. SAC, Cal Poly Pomona and Montclair Place, plus grocery employers El Super, Super King Market and Mother's Nutritional Center.
Line 492 — El Monte Station to Arcadia to Montclair Transit Center via Arrow Highway. Its stops read like an easy-apply job list: Target, Sam's Club, Aldi, Albertsons, Stater Bros, Smart & Final, Superior Grocers, Grocery Outlet and El Super.
Silver Streak — bus rapid transit from Montclair to Downtown Los Angeles, serving Pomona Transit Center, Cal Poly Pomona, Plaza West Covina and the downtown LA medical campuses. This is the line to the downtown legal aid clinics.
Fares: check Foothill Transit's fare page or ask the driver what a single ride and a day pass cost before you budget a day of travel.
Line 480 · Line 492 · Silver Streak · Fares
Half price with an EBT card
Metrolink's San Bernardino Line runs from Montclair to Los Angeles and San Bernardino, and California EBT cardholders get 50% off through the low-income fare discount. That discount is tied to having CalFresh or EBT already, which is one more reason the benefits application comes first — see the benefits section on the resources page.
The honest warning about warehouse work without a car
Amazon and most Inland Empire fulfillment centres run shifts that start or end outside bus service hours — Route 61 roughly 4:04 am to 11:30 pm, Route 66 roughly 4:21 am to 11:00 pm — and the facilities themselves sit in industrial areas with little or no bus service. A warehouse job you cannot physically reach at 4:30 am is not a job.
Retail, grocery, food service and clinic-adjacent work on the Holt Blvd, Foothill Blvd, Arrow Highway and Montclair Place corridors is far more realistic without a car. Start there, and treat a warehouse shift as something to take on once you have a ride, a carpool, or a car.
5. Training you can finish in under six months
Short, local, and priced. The cheapest route from a certificate to a paycheque is the Chaffey College CNA program, and the closest classroom of any kind is here in Montclair.
Chaffey College — Certified Nursing Assistant
Train as a certified nursing assistant in one semester at the Fontana or Chino campus. Classes usually run afternoon or evening, and Saturday clinicals at a local skilled nursing facility are mandatory — plan childcare and transport for Saturdays before you enroll.
Tuition $0.00. Published fees: parking $30.00, maroon scrub top $15.50, black scrub pants $15.50, CNA kit $90.50, textbook $76.50, workbook $24.00, state exam testing fee $120.00, Livescan fingerprinting $50.00, health screening requirements $330.00 (varies with your insurance). Estimated total fees $752.00. You must pass the California state nursing assistant certification exam at the end.
If you have a record, read this first. The program takes Livescan fingerprints, and state CNA certification involves a Department of Public Health background review — so start on record clearing (section 7) before or alongside enrolling. Campuses: Fontana, 16855 Merrill Ave., Fontana 92335; Chino, 5897 College Park Ave., Chino 91710.
Chaffey Adult School — vehicle maintenance and light repair
4725 Benito Street, Montclair (the high school auto lab) · Thursdays 6:30–9:30 pm · $130 per semester. An ASE-certified curriculum covering air cleaners, wiper blades, tires, shocks, batteries, tire balancing, cooling, HVAC, charging and starter systems, and brakes. Repeatable if you are working toward the industry certification exam hours.
Courses run 18 weeks and fees are per semester. Semester 1 starts the week of August 10; semester 2 starts January 4. This class is inside Montclair — for many residents that is a walk or a short local trip. Call (909) 391-5365 to enroll.
Chaffey Adult School — welding
Wednesdays 6:00–9:00 pm in the Chino High welding lab · $150 per semester. Covers tools, equipment and safety, weld quality, welding symbols, blueprint reading, oxyfuel gas cutting on carbon steel, shielded metal arc welding and gas welding. Call (909) 391-5365 to enroll.
Typing certification and medical billing and coding
Chaffey Adult School also teaches typing certification and medical billing and coding, plus Microsoft software, machine drafting and CAD, bench carpentry, masonry, medical healthcare interpreting, instructional aide prep and parenting. A certified typing speed is the cheapest credential on this page, and it opens clerical and data entry work.
Call the adult school at (909) 391-5365 and ask for the fee and the next start date. The AJCC resource room gives free typing tests too, though those do not come with a certificate.
What Chaffey College actually costs
The enrollment fee is $46 per unit. That fee is waived if you qualify for the California College Promise Grant or Panther Promise through financial aid — which is how a short certificate ends up costing only materials and exam fees.
Panther Promise gives up to two years of free tuition to first-time college students — call the financial aid office and ask for the next information session. Other charges still apply: health fee $21 per fall and spring ($10.50 on Promise Grant A), transportation fee $8–$9, student representation fee $2, optional college services and technology fees $8 each, parking permit $30.
Medical Assistant is not a six-month program
The Medical Assistant Certificate at Chaffey Adult School runs two semesters — roughly a year, not the under-six-months this section is about. It is a real route into entry-level clinical work, so if you want it, plan for a year and ask the adult school for the current fee before you commit.
Chaffey College InTech Center
An accelerated, hands-on industrial training centre. Its Industrial Electrical and Mechanical Pre-Apprenticeship is registered with the Department of Apprenticeship Standards and prepares you for entry-level industrial maintenance technician work, with a possible pathway into a full apprenticeship.
Ask an AJCC career advisor to help you get the length, cost and application steps before you plan around it. One thing to know now: the InTech welding program is paused until Summer 2026 while a new welding centre is built, so use the adult school welding class above in the meantime.
Forklift, phlebotomy, CDL, food handler, guard card
Before you pay any training school for forklift, phlebotomy, CDL or food handler training, ask an AJCC advisor first. Prices these schools quote can be far more than you need to spend, and the AJCC can help fund training that is worth it.
Two ways to save money here. Amazon gives powered industrial truck training to its warehouse associates, so you can learn forklift on the job instead of buying it. For a security guard card, registration comes from the state Bureau of Security and Investigative Services — (800) 952-5210 — where a baton permit application is $66 and a firearms permit application is $110. Food handler cards are usually arranged, and often paid for, by the restaurant that hires you.
Where the money can come from: the California College Promise Grant waives the enrollment fee; EOPS covers required course materials and transportation fees for students who qualify; and AJCC career advisors provide assistance in funding training programs. More on all three on the resources page.
6. Your rights with a record
The California Fair Chance Act took effect January 1, 2018. It is Government Code section 12952, part of the Fair Employment and Housing Act, and it is enforced by the California Civil Rights Department. Everything in this section comes from that department's own guidance. It is information, not legal advice, and nothing here promises any particular outcome.
Who it covers
Public and private employers with five or more employees, plus union hiring halls, labour contractors, temporary employment agencies and client employers. That last part matters: the warehouse staffing agencies in section 3 are covered.
Not covered: certain positions at health care facilities, farm labour contractors, positions with state criminal justice agencies, and any position where another law requires a background check or restricts employment based on criminal history. Even then, use of criminal history can still be challenged as discriminatory if it has an adverse impact on a protected group, and the employer has to show the practice is job-related and consistent with business necessity.
What an employer cannot ask before a conditional offer
- Put conviction-history questions on the job application.
- Ask about, or consider, your criminal history at all.
- State on an application that a criminal history would disqualify you.
- Consider, distribute or disseminate information about your referral to or participation in a pretrial or post-trial diversion program.
And some things an employer may never consider, at any stage: arrests not followed by a conviction; participation in completed diversion programs where the charges or conviction were dismissed, sealed or eradicated; and convictions that have been sealed, dismissed, expunged or statutorily eradicated.
When a background check may happen
After a job offer is made. Only then may the employer run a criminal history check. If an application asks you about convictions before that point, that itself is the violation.
If an offer is pulled because of your record
The employer has to follow a specific sequence, and each step is a chance for you.
- An individualized assessment. The employer must weigh the nature and gravity of the criminal history including the harm caused, the time that has passed since the conviction, and the nature of the job including its essential functions and environment. An employer cannot simply state it will not hire anyone convicted of a certain crime.
- Written preliminary notice. It must tell you in writing, identify the convictions that disqualify you, and — if it obtained a conviction history report — give you a copy of that report.
- At least five business days to respond. The employer must tell you that you may respond and give you no less than five business days. If you dispute the accuracy of the report and say so within that first five-day window, you get an additional five days.
- What you can submit. Evidence challenging the accuracy of the report; evidence of rehabilitation; and evidence of circumstances you believe matter about your life or the offence. The department expressly lists employment history, an explanation of the circumstances, and rehabilitation efforts such as education or training. In practice: a certificate of completion from section 5, a CNA certificate, an AJCC training record, or a letter from a case manager or house manager all fit.
- Final written notice. It must notify you in writing of any final disqualification, any internal procedure to challenge it, and your right to file a complaint with the Civil Rights Department.
One protection worth knowing: if a notice is sent in a format with no confirmation of receipt, such as untracked mail, a notice to a California address is deemed received five calendar days after it was deposited for delivery — so the clock is not silently run out on you.
All of this costs nothing. The Civil Rights Department publishes a Fair Chance Act fact sheet in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Tagalog and Vietnamese, sample forms, a complaint route, a discriminatory-ads report route, and an interactive guide. There is a deadline for filing a complaint, so if this happens to you, ask what it is when you call rather than assuming you have time.

7. Clearing a record
Dismissal, sealing and reduction are three different things, and free help exists for all of them. Nobody on this page can promise a court outcome — these are the routes and the phone numbers, drawn from the courts' own self-help guidance.
| Step | What it costs | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| First: get your own RAP sheet | $25 processing fee; you may be eligible for a fee waiver. A separate fingerprint rolling fee applies at the Live Scan site. | Request your own California criminal history from the Department of Justice using Live Scan form BCIA 8016RR — write "Record Review" for both type and reason, then take it to any public Live Scan site, usually a police department or sheriff's office. Your conviction may already have been dismissed automatically under Penal Code 1203.425, and this is how you find out before paying anyone to file. If something on it is wrong, file the Claim of Alleged Inaccuracy or Incompleteness. Attorney General — record review |
| Misdemeanor dismissal | No filing fee is listed — ask the courthouse what it charges before you file. | You can petition if you have no new cases pending and are not on probation or parole in any case. If you satisfied your probation terms, or got early termination, the court must grant the petition. If you did not, it is the court's discretion and you may attach documents showing it would serve the interests of justice. Still on probation? You must also ask for early termination under Penal Code 1203.3, for which there is no statewide form. Never given probation? Wait at least one year from conviction. Forms: CR-180, granted or denied on CR-181. Courts self-help — misdemeanors |
| Felony reduced under Proposition 47 | Ask the courthouse where the conviction happened what it charges. | For convictions before November 2014: simple drug possession with no sales or transportation, or certain theft offences where the value was not more than $950 — commercial burglary, forgery, bad checks, grand theft, petty theft, receiving stolen property. Disqualifiers: a prior requiring sex offender registration, or a "super strike." The old November 22, 2022 deadline was removed effective October 8, 2023, so you can still ask. Filed under Penal Code 1170.18. Courts self-help — Prop 47 |
| Sealing an arrest with no conviction | Ask the courthouse what it charges. | Under Penal Code 851.91, if you were arrested and no charges were filed, charges were dismissed, you completed diversion or deferred entry of judgment and charges were dismissed, or you were found not guilty. Sealing removes the records from public view, but some government agencies, including law enforcement, can still see them, and you must still disclose the arrest for public office, peace officer employment, state or local licences, and Lottery Commission contracts. Forms: CR-409 with CR-409-INFO, granted on CR-410, translated into Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Vietnamese. Courts self-help — arrest with no conviction |

A Certificate of Rehabilitation has its own bar: free from custody at least seven years, a California resident for five consecutive years before filing, not on probation or parole, passing a background check, and filing in your county of residence. It releases you from most disabilities flowing from the conviction, but it does not remove court records from public inspection and may not stop the conviction being used as a prior later. Ask the public defender's unit whether it fits your case before you count on it.
